Digging deeper
3+ hours after the trade deadline now, and let’s look a bit deeper at the look of things. Not too deep though, I’m still sick:
Flames/Avalanche/Coyotes:
The Calgary Flames obviously look like the most-improved team after today’s deadline, and who’s to argue? They added the 2nd most sought-after player available while keeping the core of their team intact. They also beefed up their D by acquiring Leopold, an experienced guy who’s played there before. If I was Darryl Sutter though, I would have added a backup goaltender. With all due respect to Curtis Mcelhinney, don’t try to convince me that a guy that has a very similar last name to Ronald McDonald can get the job done come playoff time if anything happens to Mikkaa.
Hurricanes/Kings/Oilers:
Erik Cole will be happy he’s going back to Carolina, there’s no doubt about that. I think everyone wins in that trade, except us. Cole always terrorized us when he played with that horrendous Canes jersey, and he never really clicked with anyone in Edmonton. Justin Williams also goes to L.A. FAR FAR AWAY FROM SAKU! Don’t worry Saku, he can’t hurt you now.
Blue Jackets/Senators:
I think this is the most, shall I say, equal trade of the day. Not also did it make me hate my life a little less by being the first trade of the day at 10:00 AM, it fulfilled both of these teams’ needs. Antoine Vermette will get considerably more ice time in Ohio while Pascal Leclaire will really get a chance to be Ottawa’s guy in nets. The only part of this trade that sucks is that we’re gona see a lot less of Vermette, a guy I really enjoy watching and would have loved to have had on our team. Plus, he’s got a hot girlfriend. Well, I don’t know if he’s got a gilfriend. Ehh what the hell, he speaks French and he plays in the NHL, he’s got a hot girlfriend.
Coyotes/Rangers/Flyers/Flames:
In my opinion, Don Maloney did an excellent job in getting a return for his traded ASSets, especially if he can resign Scottie Upshall past this year. Nigel Dawes is a good character guy to have on your team. Petr Prucha, with the right ice time, will get you 25-30 goals. Let’s not forget, this is a guy who scored 30 as a rookie in 05/06. They also get a very good player in Matthew Lombardi. Along with that, the ‘Yotes also get a 1st, 2nd and 4th round picks. I really like what they did.
Bruins/Lightning/Ducks:
ummmmm, fuck the bruins? Mark Recchi will be very useful for them. And Montador is a good hard-hitting defenseman who will be very important for them down the stretch. Screw you and your moves that make sense, Peter Chiarelli!
Flyers/Sharks/Coyotes:
Daniel Carcillo? Kyle McLaren? I guess Philly needed a bit of a uhh, scoring punch.
Bob Gainey/Himself:
Tanguay’s coming back – positive. Hopefully Polish Thunder can start playing like the Komo of old and starts breaking some necks. Hopefully Carey snaps out of it and drops the cocaine for something that can actually help him in games, like I don’t know, RedBull or something. Imagine Tom Kostopoulos on speed? I WOULD PAY TO SEE THAT! Yeah, a big center would have been very very nice to have, but hey, we’ve got an extremely good team on paper, and I’m guessing if the Schneider acquisition was done today, people would be panicking less. It’s understandably really frustrating to see other teams go out and improve their squad, but let’s just reserve our judgment to the end of the season.
