Montreal Canadiens 1-2 New Jersey ‘We swear, we can score more than 2 goals in a game. Promise’ Devils
TopShelf’s completely Professional Game-Report:
Zach Parise scored 31 seconds into overtime, Scott Clemensen made 25 saves and the New Jersey Devils managed to beat the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 2-1.
Prior to the game, more talk was about how Martin Brodeur would miss a first game against the Habs in more than 10 years, but that didn’t seem to faze backup goalie Clemmensen.
Despite being peppered with 13 shots in the opening period as Montreal looked to establish an early edge, the Iowa native stood strong in only allowing one goal to keep his team in it.
Matt D’Agostini continued his fairy-tale start to his NHL career by scoring a goal in a third consecutive game. The Hamilton callup set up the play in the Devils’ offensive zone, passed the puck to the point and then headed to the net. And when Andrei Markov took a slapshot at the net, D’Agostini was there to bury the rebound home to put his team a goal up.
Montreal kept up the sustained pressure and it almost paid off on several occasions but Clemmensen stood strong to frustrate Alex Kovalev, Maxim Lapierre and Tomas Plekanec among others.
The second period was more of the same story. The Canadiens kept looking for that second goal to establish some kind of comfortable lead, but as they pushed on and on, they took more and more risks.
And those risks caught up to them when Jamie Langenbrunner beat Markov to the puck at his own blue line, skated into the offensive zone and took a slapshot at Carey Price who let the puck trickle under his pads and allowed New Jersey to get on level terms.
The rest of the contest was typical of any Devils game, with much of the play being a power struggle in the neutral zone. Both teams had their chances in the final period but Price and Clemmensen did their part in giving their respective teams a chance to come away with the 2 points.
As the minutes washed away on the clock, a scare rose through the Bell Centre. First it was Habs defenseman Mathieu Dandenault who blocked a puck with the inside of his ankle, and then Andrei Markov received a puck to his face and skated off bleeding from his nose and mouth. Both hadn’t returned by the end of the game.
With the game set to go into overtime, Alex Kovalev was sent to the penalty box for tripping, which meant his team would have to undertake the extra 5 a man short. And with the man advantage, the New Jersey Devils made no mistake putting the game to bed 31 seconds into overtime when Zach Parise accepted a nice pass across the crease from Patrik Elias and beat Carey Price who was completely out of position.
TopShelf’s notes o’ da day:
-We finished the game with 4 defensemen, so a point really isn’t all that bad.
-HEY! HEY GUYS AND GALS! LET’S ALL HATE ON ALEX KOVALEV! HE HASN’T SCORED IN 1000 GAMES! WE DON’T ACTUALLY WATCH THE GAMES BUT EVERYONE IS SAYING HE SUCKS, SO LET’S SAY WHAT THEY’RE SAYING! YAAAAA DOLCE&GABBANA YA HAIRGEL AND STUFF LIKE THAT!
