Montreal Canadiens 2-1 Minnesota ‘We weren’t going to be made fun of because our fans actually show up to the games but we didn’t score on 10 P.P opportunities, so we’re just asking for it’ Wild
TopShelf’s Completely professional GameReport:
Carey Price was exquisite once again, the Minnesota wild couldn’t conver on 10 powerplay opportunities and Saku Koivu got the better of his little brother in St Paul on thursday night.
The fans were barely in their seats when Brent Burns snuck into the crease and gave the Wild the all-important first goal. It didn’t take long for the Habs to answer back, when Alex Tanguay fed a pass to Francis Bouillon and his shot from the point fooled Josh Harding and tied the score at 1 apiece.
Perhaps the only other significant play of the first period was captain Saku Koivu getting his first penalty of the season when he was called for holding, ironically, his little brother Mikko.
Early in the second 20, Montreal found itself with a 2 man advantage and the reigning best power play in the league 2 years running made no mistake when Andrei Markov gave his team the lead with a beautiful slap-shot that Harding had trouble seeing. It was the Russian defenseman`s first goal of the season, to go along with his 10 assists.
After that goal, a series of tripping, cross-checking, delay of game and too many men minors forced the Canadiens to be shorthanded for a total of 5:51, including a span of 2:10 when they were short two men.
Cue the heroics however, as all the penalty killers and Cary Price were effective antagonists to the 18,568 packed inside the ExCel Energy Centre. In total, the P.K killed off 10 consecutive penalties, and that against the league`s 3rd best powerplay coming into this game. They were far from convincing however, as the best chance fell to Montreal center Robert Lang, who went in 1 on 1 in front of Josh Harding, but failed to get a shot off as the puck just got away from him.
Eric Belanger had a great opportunity early in the third period to put his team on level terms when he was on a breakaway, but failed to beat Carey Price on the backhand. And other than a little fight breaking out near the end of the game, nothing more was to be added to the scoreboard as the Canadiens escaped with another 2 points in the bag.
TopShelf`s notes o`da day:
-How does the 4th line not get more praise? Seriously, the way they played tonight was reminiscing of the Sundstrom days. HAHAHAHA! No for real though, they were good!
-Brisebois, for now, is a better option than that O`byrne fellow. Why does Guy need to put him on the P.P though? Good god, Markov and Tanguay for the first unit at the point, and Hamrlik and S. Kostitsyn for the second unit. Trust me, I know what I`m talking about.
-Carey Price deserves a long warm massage. And some of those candles that smell good, that shit`s nice.
-Thank god we scored on our 5 on 3. I was gona have to go down there and kick some sense into them!
-10:27 was the time we were shorthanded during the second period. Minnesota barely had a chance. HAHA! THEY SUCK!
-Seriously though, we were two men down for a total of 2 minutes and 29 seconds. Against the 3rd best P.P in the league coming in. That`s huge. Major Props and High Five and Bear hugs to all the guys that did the job out there tonight. WE`RE THINKING OF YOU!
-Tom Kostopoulos is a fantastic team player. He makes me wana get up and make him a sandwich.
