Montreal Canadiens 2-5 New Jersey ‘We really tried to trade for Miroslav Satan’ Devils

Guy Carbonneau, after last night’s game, pondering what to do with his team

Man, New Jersey is to us what normality is to Tom Cruise eh?

Game was never in doubt in my opinion. Yeah, Gorgeous Gorges scored to bring us within 1, but you always had the feeling that the guys in darker red always had a second gear to go to if they needed it. We not only got outskated, we got outworked and outfought.

The coach put it best when, in his post-game interview, he stated that “you need 20 players to beat Jersey” and obviously, that wasn’t the case.

Norman Flynn, on L’Antichambre, also had a very good point: “Le trio d’energie a eu une panne d’electricite”. Couldn’t have said it better myself. The Habs have been living and dying on the back of Maxim Lapierre’s line lately, and in the past two games, it’s no coincidence that that line hasn’t showed up.

The Canadiens had 13 hits last nigh – you’re not gona beat the Devils if you don’t compete with them. They gave us a lesson in zone coverage and how to play disciplined hockey.

95% of the time, a New Jersey player was first to the puck. 95% of the time, a New Jersey player had his stick in the passing lanes. 95% of the time, a New Jersey player outworked a Habs player along the boards.

Michel Bergeron also said that for the Devils, their energy is generated by guys like Zach Parise, Brian Gionta, Patrik Elias, Travis Zajac and Dainius Zubrus – their top two lines.

While Montreal has to rely on the 3rd and 4th lines to get the hitting game going, the Devils’ skilled players take care of that.

What should Bob do? Trade for a big power forward a la Lecavalier? Trade for a Bouwmeester even though the powerplay seems to be clicking now?

We lost to a team that played the same style of hockey the Flyers play, and if we play the Devils or Flyers in the playoffs, I’m not betting on our chances to win a best of 7 series.
