Montreal Canadiens 3-1 Florida ‘We totally deserve a hockey team more than Winnipeg or Quebec’ Panthers

TopShelf’s Completely professional GameReport:

Francis Bouillon scored the winner (yes yes, he did! no lie!) and the Canadiens extended their winning streak to 5 games by disposing of the Florida Panthers Monday night at the Bell Centre.

Bouillon, who started the game as a forward, struck halfway through the third period to restore Montreal’s lead, and Tomas Plekanec added the third into an empty net to help the Habs collect 11 out of a possible 12 points so far this campaign.

Florida had its fair share of offense though, forcing backup Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak to make 35 saves on the night. Their sustained offence bore fruit once, when Keith Ballard scored his first of the season by getting to a rebound and slotting it past the young netminder.

But that wasn’t before Montreal struck first, and who else but captain Saku Koivu to do the damage? After accepting a no-look backhand pass from Andrei Markov, who collected his league-leading 9th assist of the season, Koivu had no trouble putting the puck past a misplaced Tomas Vokoun.

After the Panthers tied the score at 1, Bouillon – who was coming back from an injury which had kept him out of the lineup so far this season – directed a slap shot towards Vokoun and the goalie couldn’t spot it in time to make the save. It was only the defenseman’s 4th goal in the last 81 games.

Florida pressed hard to try to find the equaliser, but with time winding down the Panthers had to pull Vokoun for the extra attacker, and Tomas Plekanec accepted a pass from linemate Alex Kovalev to put the game to bed and record his first goal this season into the abandoned Florida net.

TopShelf’s notes o’ da day:

-Was it just me, or did the jerseys they wore today (apparently from the ’71 season) look EXACTLY like the away jerseys we wear this year?

-How awesome is Andrei Markov? Seriously, the guy should have a statue built of him. Until he pulls a Souray and beats his wife and goes to Edmonton to play with Ryan Smyth only to find out later that he was too late and Smyth had already left and gone to Avalanche land to play with his good buddy Sakic. What I said about the whole beating up the wife thing…not on the record.

-The terminator was impeccable today. That’s right, I said impeccable. He was practically flawless.

-Don’t say I was wrong with my prediction of Zednik scoring. He would have scored…if he had rememberd he was playing today.

-Chips did allright. Didn’t hurt his chances, that’s for sure. But neither did Dagenais. AND WHERE IS DAGENAIS NOW! HUH!!!

-I miss Jim Dowd…not really.

-I don’t want to hear any more complaining about Plekanec’s line. They’re getting the chances. Obviously, following a hugely succesfull campaign last year they are much more marked this season, but they’re getting the chances and sooner or later, they will start producing again. Just chill down, and have a fucken Mr Freeze. Yes, I know my nickname for Plekanec is ‘The season hasn’t started for me yet’, but only I’m allowed to make fun of him. So everyone just calm the F down!

-Francis ‘Big Frank’ Bouillon scored! I was happy to see that. Brought a warm feeling to my toes.

-Nathan Horton, with his 174 career points, is in the top 10 of Panthers Franchise scoring leaders. And that’s kinda funny.

-I was really close again with my prediction. Seriously, someone should be paying me for this shit.

-This is Florida’s alternate logo. A palm tree, and a hockey stick. Beautifully crossing one another with a stunning sun in the background:
