Montreal Canadiens 3-2 Pittsburgh ‘Tweety Birds’ Penguins

TopShelf’s completely Professional GameReport:

Andrei Kostitsyn recorded his first career-hattrick, Carey Price made 32 saves and the Montreal Canadiens made it out of Pittsburgh with 2 points after their Christmas break.

The elder Kostitsyn, who had missed 2 games with a leg injury, got the okay from the team doctors to play earlier in the day and took full advantage of the opportunity by scoring the 3 goals Montreal needed to beat their Eastern Conference rivals.

Kostitsyn opened the scoring barely a minute inside the first period when he accepted Tomas Plekanec’s feed inside the crease and beat Marc Andre Fleury with a sweet wrist-shot.

Pascal Dupuis then put the Penguins on level terms, but it was likely that even he was surprised the puck went in. Dupuis’ slapshot came off the boards and off of Price’s skate and made its way into the net before the young netminder could grab it.

The goal seemed to only fuel the Habs on, and just as it looked as the two teams would head into the locker rooms with a goal apiece, Kostitsyn once again had something to say about it.

The Belarussian winger’s second of the game was almost a carbon-copy of the first. Once again it was Plekanec who made the pass to Kostitsyn in the crease and he had no trouble beating Fleury for the second time of the night.

Sidney Crosby then tied the game at 2 with his 15th goal of the season. The Penguins’ captain took Dupuis’ pass and surprised Price with a wraparound to put the teams level.

Kostitsyn then came back to haunt Fleury early in the third when his slapshot from just past the blueline beat the Quebec-born goaltender and put the Habs 3-2 up to stay,

TopShelf’s notes o’ da day:

-I drop Andrei from my pool two days ago, he scored a hattrick today. Fucken lovely.

-Carey Price is the anti-puck.

-Is this the return of Tomas Plekanec?

-I miss Pierre Dagenais.
