Montreal Canadiens 3-2 St Louis ‘Blues? Was that your best shit?’ Blues

TopShelf’s completely Professional GameReport:

Alex Kovalev scored the shootout winner and Carey Price made 24 saves as Montreal ended its 2-game losing streak Sunday night in Missouri.

It didn’t start well for the Habs though, as Steve Regier registered his first point of his short NHL career 3:48 into the opening period. Regier had been point-less in 18 career games before his 2 goals on the night, and his feat was made the more impressive due to the fact he was lacing up his skates for the first time with the Blues.

Manny Legace then made an impressive save on Tomas Plekanec with seconds left to go in the period when he dived to his left to deny the Czech center.

The second period was a series of penalty after penalty for both teams, but there was time for a long-overdue goal by Andrei Kostitsyn. The young Belarussian slipped by Blues defenseman Eric Brewer and directed a backhand shot which Legace failed to stop.

Regier then came back to haunt the Canadiens early in the third when he received a nice pass across the crease from David Perron and he made no mistake putting it home for his second of the game.

Montreal kept up the pressure on Legace’s net and said pressure finally paid dividends when Robert Lang, who had been guilty of a good number of misses during the team’s last game, received a nice pass from the older Kostitsyn brother and took 2 cracks at it before putting it in to tie the game with 4 minutes to go.

The Canadiens then had a scare in the overtime period when defenseman Francis Bouillon took a puck to the net and skated off the ice in obvious pain. The shootout ensued and after Price and Legace stopped the first 5 shooters, it was left to Alex Kovalev to win it for his team and he made no mistake directing a backhand shot past the St Louis netminder and bag the 2 points for the Habs.

TopShelf’s notes o’ da day:

-This is the Andrei Kostitsyn I want to see. The one that gets the puck and puts his shoulder down, skates at defensemen and makes the goalie pull off a save.

-Sweet save by Price on Tkachuk in the shootout. How the hell do you pronounce his name anyway? CHACHUK? TCHACHUK!? Make up your mind man!

-Our powerplay stinks more than St Patrick’s day at an Irish cookhouse. It ain’t pretty man!

-This is a game, ladies and gentlemen, that will not be going in the Habs Classics DVD.
