Montreal Canadiens 3-6 Toronto ‘I really can’t make fun of them, sorry, not tonight’ Maple Leafs
TopShelf’s Completely professional GameReport:
Former Montreal Canadiens centre Mikhail Grabovski got the better of his ex team Saturday night, as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Habs by a score of 6-3 at Air Canada Centre.
In a game where Montreal was outshot 41-20, the young centre recorded a goal and an assist and linemate Niklas Hagman added two goals as the speedy leafs gave the Montreal defense all that they could handle and more.
The game started out with a scary moment, as Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos was hit with a game misconduct penalty on a boarding call on Toronto’s Mike Van Ryn. And it was only the start of the penalty trouble for the Habs, as they had to kill 8 penalties during course of the night.
During the major penalty Kostopoulos was assesed along with his game misconduct, Toronto found a way to score their first goal after a nifty move by Grabovski who found Hagman who made no mistake in putting his team one goal up early on.
Two minutes had barely passed in the second period when Grabovski scored his team’s second goal which was assisted by Nikolai Kulemin and Ian White. But as they have done it so many times before, Montreal scored 2 back to back goals to put themselves on level terms. The first by newly acquired centre Robert Lang and the second by Tomas Plekanec, his fourth of the season.
Niklas Hagman then continued to torment the Canadiens defense, scoring his second of the game and putting his team ahead once more. Saku Koivu then scored a beautiful wrist-shot goal to bring the Habs back on level terms, but that as all the scoring Montreal would be able to muster up.
Nik Antropov then scored with less than 4 minutes to go in the middle period to put the Leafs 4-3 up and bring them into the intermission ahead.
And if you were expecting the Habs to pull off another comeback in the final period, all hopes were dashed when Pavel Kubina scored on yet another powerplay to put his team 5-3 up. And when Alexei Ponikarovsky tallied with 3:30 to go in the third, the victory was all but confirmed for the Leafs and the Habs were left licking their wounds following their second loss in two nights.
TopShelf’s notes o’ da day:
-”What a dirty hit by Kostopoulos! There is no room for stuff like that in the league!” GIVE ME A KIT-KAT BREAK! SERIOUSLY! Tom Kostopoulos isn’t the type of player that’ll intentionally try to injure players. And why the hell would Van Ryn just bend over at the last second? He knew Kostopoulos was lining him up for a check, and instead of playing the puck over and absorbing the check, he just decided to bend over and not move. I’m not blaming Van Ryn, but come on man, use yo brain…or like, that neurotransmitter your brain emits when danger nears.
-Carbonneau was livid with his team, and he has every right to be. We have to stay out of the box.
-I would LOVE to know what Koivu said to Grabovski when the little cunt was down on the floor. OH MAN HOW I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE DIRTY HARRYAND GRABOVSKI GO!
-Be proud of the team tonight. We made an art out of losing.
-It’s times like these I miss Sergei Samsonov…
-I have no complaints about trading Mikhail Grabovksi, but what did we get for him? That’s my only complaint, fuck.
-I miss the Sergei Kostitsyn of last year. I miss the Sergei that takes the puck and uses his speed to get past defenders. I miss the Sergei that isn’t afraid of taking more shots. I miss the Sergei that makes pasta with rose sauce look like Shish Kabab. I miss the Sergei that gets the puck, and at that point no one can take it from him.
-Our transitioning play has to improve. The team has to stop turning the puck over so much. We have to understand that teams see us as the team to beat now. We have to adjust to that. And unless there are chicks with beer-flavored nipples in the penalty box, we have to stop taking bad penalties.
