Montreal Canadiens 4-3 Buffalo ‘We fucken drafted Mike Ramsey bitch!’ Sabres
TopShelf’s Completely professional GameReport:
Sergei Kostitsyn scored two goals, Steve Begin dished out the hits and the Montreal Canadiens managed to beat the Buffalo Sabres Saturday night at the Bell Centre.
Montreal went into the game on the back of a very impressive 5-2 victory over the surging Philadelphia Flyers, and they carried the momentum from the Philly game into Saturday’s contest as they searched for an early breakthrough.
But Derek Roy had other plans. The Ottawa native opened the scoring for Buffalo when he used veteran Habs defenseman Patrice Brisebois as a screen and surprised goalie Jaroslav with a wristshot that went top corner 9:10 into the opening frame.
The Sabres seemed energized by the goal, and they carried the play for much of the rest of the period as they probed for an assurance marker.
Five minutes into the midde period, Sergei Kostitsyn made the Sabres pay for their missed opportunities by scoring his 5th goal of the season when his pointshot deflected off of Roy’s stick and beat Ryan Miller in the Buffalo net.
The tie was short-lived though, and Buffalo went back in front shortly after. Jason Pominville found Clarke McArthur in the crease and the Alberta native had no problem deflecting the puck past Halak to put his team up once again.
But the Habs replied via Alex Tanguay this time. The former Calgary winger got his stick on Roman Hamrlik’s shot from the point and the puck evaded Miller to put the home team on level terms.
But for the third time in the game, Buffalo went ahead. Andrej Sekera scored a powerplay goal when his shot beat Montreal’s screened Slovak netminder with just under 7 minutes to go until the final buzzer.
But the Canadiens weren’t about to lay down in front of their adoring home crowd, and the younger of the Kostitsyn brothers added his second of the game when he picked up a juicy rebound from Alex Kovalev’s shot and put it past Miller to send the fans into delirium with just under 5 minutes to go.
Montreal’s effort on the forecheck was causing the Sabres problems all night long, and that continued to be the case in the overtime period. First it was Sekera who was called for tripping, but luckily for Lindy Ruff’s men the Habs couldn’t capitalize.
But the saying goes “play with fire and eventually you’ll get burned”. It was case in point on the night when once again Buffalo got themselves into penalty trouble and Kovalev, Montreal’s captain in Saku Koivu’s absence, scored for the third game in a row by beating Ryan Miller with a beautiful wrist shot with just 25 seconds to go in the O.T.

-SIGN HIM BOB! SIGN HIM!
-HEY! SERGEI KOSTITSYN IS ALIVE!
-When you shoot the puck, forecheck at the right time, and put traffic in front of the net = good things will happen. You won’t wake up and find an Audi in your drive-way, but good things will happen.
-Haha, Laraque was laughing at Peters during that fight. WHAT A COLD HEARTED MOTHERFUCKER! I LOVE IT! HE OWNED THAT FIGHT LIKE GEORGE BUSH OWNED THAT SHOE CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON STYLE!
-I know they got a point off us and they’re Division rivals and all, but hey, AT LEAST WE DON’T LOSE 7-3 TO THE MAPLE LEAFS!
-…oh wait, we lose 6-3 to the Maple Leafs. fuck.
-ALEX KOVALEV IS GOOD!
-Chocolate Chip cookies are the work of angels.
