Montreal Canadiens 5-2 Philadelphia ‘City of brotherly love, motherfucker’ Flyers

TopShelf’s completely Professional GameReport:

Guillaume Latendresse and Sergei Kostitsyn had a goal and an assist each, Jaroslav Halak made 29 saves and the Montreal Canadiens ended their 3 game losing streak by beating the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.

With the Flyers going into the game on the back of 5 straight wins and Montreal on the wrong end of the scoreline for 3 consecutives contests, many thought Philadelphia would easily dispose of the struggling Habs.

That was far from the case though, as the game was barely 6 minutes old when Matt D’Agostini accepted Maxim Lapierre’s nice pass and went in alone on Antero Nittymaki, beating him with a nice wrister to put his team a goal to the good.

A bit over 4 minutes after that, Sergei Kostitsyn scored only his fourth goal of the season, and that on the powerplay. Robert Lang passed the puck to the younger of the Kostitsyn brothers and the Belarussian youngster did not hesitate as he took a beautiful slapshot that eluded Nittymaki in the Philly net.

Montreal kept on coming, and they added a third goal before the period ended. Steve Begin was well-positioned in front of the Flyers’ net and when Tom Kostopoulos took a shot, it deflected off Begin’s stick and went into the net to give the Canadiens a healthy 3 goal cushion.

But the Flyers weren’t about to give up without a fight, and they gave themselves hope when Scottie Upshall spotted Aaron Asham in the crease and the former Canadiens player beat Halak with a quick snapshot.

The second period started with more of the same, and Alex Kovalev scored his second goal in two games when Begin spotted him positioned behind the Flyers’ defensemen, and when Kovalev went in on a breakaway there was nothing Nittymaki could do to stop the Russian winger from restoring his team’s 3 goal lead.

Halak then showcased his talents when he pulled off numerous key saves to repeatedly frustrate the high-scoring Flyers and keep his team in control of the game.

He couldn’t stop them all though, and when Braydon Coburn took a seemingly harmless shot, the puck deflected off of Francis Bouillon’s hand and beat Halak to put Philadelphia within 2.

A bit over 5 minutes later though, Guillaume Latendresse -who had been having perhaps his best game in a Canadiens uniform- put the game to bed when he netted his second in as many games on the powerplay.

TopShelf’s notes o’ da day:

-Like the incredibly well-spoken gentlemen who wrote the above article stated, Tender Gender had probably his best game…like, ever. Going to the net, hitting guys along the boards and actually coming out with the puck. GUI! GUI! GUI! GUI! GUI! GUI!…ok one more, GUI!

-Halak has to control his rebounds. He made the saves when he had to though, so he’s a good little Slovak. Deserved the victory tonight.

-Komisarek was badly missed man. His beautiful positioning play, his timely blocked shots, his amazingly well-spiked hair. Ahhhhh, Mikey! Sign him Bob. DO IT! DO IT FOR US!

-SERGEI KOSTITSYN SCORED! HALLELUJAH! I missed that demonic smile of his.

-How sexy is Steve Begin? Did you see that pass to Kovy on the breakaway? OHHHH MAMA! EYE OF THE TIGER BABY!!!!

-D’Agostini is playing like a veteran, and he’s only like…22.

-We have to continue playing the same way we did, can’t let this be a one-time thing.

-I swear to god man, if Tom Kostopoulos could score, he’d have 220 goals this season.
