The day we really could have used the 2 points : Habs 2-3 Senators

Hey, it wasn’t for lack of effort.

The players showed up. They battled hard, but the Ottawa Senators simply won ’cause they outmanned your Montreal Canadiens.

Maxim Lapierre was in the box forĀ a crucial 5 minutes in the 3rd period for fighting Brian Lee, and we really could have used him.

You could perhaps fault Jaro Halak for not getting to the 3rd goal, but Heatley can shoot a puck quicker than you can say “Jesus Christ! Where the hell did my chocolate-coated Mercedes go!?”. He made some big saves and as much as some people want him dead, those big eyes are just essential. HE SEES EVERYTHING 3 TIMES ITS SIZE!

Doug Janik impressed me, I’ll admit. But again, he’s no Andrei Markov, he’ no Mathieu Schneider, he’s no Josh Gorges and he’s definitely no Dax Sheppard.

Ryan O’Byrne made me wish I was a Thrashers fan…only not really. Hockey’s a game of a series of decisions, and O’Byrne made the wrong ones last night.

Jarkko Ruutu and Chris Neil were too comfortable last night, and that with Gregory Stewart and Georges Laraque both dressed. I thought the ‘tough guys’ should have maybe made their presence felt a bit more.

The absentees were felt - for the first time in 7 games, the powerplay failed to convert. Having Roman Hamrlik and Patrice Brisebois on the point isn’t the same as having Markov and Schneider, and that allowed the Sens’ PK guys to focus all their energy down low.

But like I said before the game, Markov has the best outlet pass on the team, and that was also clear yesterday as the team struggled more than in recent game to get out of their zone.

Speaking of struggling, how ’bout those refs last night? You never want to blame the officials, but there was an instant or two yesterday where they left me scratching my head, and it’s not ’cause my brain is really really big so I have to scratch my head, but because they made a couple of really quesionable calls. (ie. the tripping near the end of the game behind the Ottawa net)

Oh yeah, one more thing. Ottawa had 42 hits. Montreal had 22. Mike Komisarek had none of those.
