Was it really dirty?
Does the Tom Kostopoulos hit on Mike Van Ryn deserve a multi-game suspension like some papers are suggesting?
First of all, let’s look at the facts. Kostopoulos has never been known as a Steve Downie or a Sean Avery, which means he’s not a dirty player. He is, on the other hand, known as a player who always finishes his checks.
Rewind to Saturday night’s “game” against the Leafs, Van Ryn is going for the puck behind the net, he turns his head and sees Tom going towards him at top speed. Most players would play the puck and avoid the check, Van Ryn decides to protect the puck. This isn’t peewee hockey in Michigan Mike.
Did Kostopoulos have time to stop? I highly doubt it. Could Van Ryn have avoided him? Maybe. Is Kostopoulos a dirty player? No. Am I wearing any underwear? Not at this present moment.
Yes, it was a dirty hit. Yes, you shouldn’t hit from behind. Yes, a suspension is warranted - 1 or 2 games. But that’s it. Tell me why Todd Bertuzzi is still playing in the league and maybe then will I consider holding a grudge against Kostopoulos.
I’m outta here. Steve Wilkos is on.
